AM: 55km run + 5km hobble :: 34M
I'm not going to go into too much detail right now, but its pretty obvious it didn't go well. The weather was demoralizing and when injury struck, I wasn't in the state of mind to fight to finish. I almost immediately threw in the towel. The right thing to do, but disappointing nonetheless. More later.

Final Prepartions
AM: 26 min :: 4M
The next time I run I do will be 62M. Its a little hard to grasp, so I just say 10x10k. Its like intervals see! Katie and I got a little bit of a late start, but we got down here about mid-afternoon and hung out with Andy and Robin. They gave us the insiders tour of Madison. UW is huge! It just seems bigger than the UofM, even though their roughly the same enrollment. I forgot how big Camp Randall is. I'll be interested to see how the new Gopher stadium compares. We had some dinner at Noodles and then went to the pre-race briefing. Everything is in order. 6:30 is going to feel early. And cold by the looks of it.

Another blustery one. Still feeling good, but getting a little more nervous. All is well.

Running 100k....With An Added Degree Of Difficulty
PM: 31 min :: 5M
Boy was I running the right direction today. I chose to run home from work along West River Road and had the wind at my back pretty much the entire way. Too bad the race on Saturday is a loop course. The race day weather is really looking rough: 19 degrees, -6 wind chill, 20 mph winds at the start. Oh and throw in a possiblity of snow showers. I'm not freaked out about it, because in the end it will be what it will be. There is a certain sense of frustration, however, that I've worked hard to get in good shape and run a fast time, but it will be more of a survival run. Like I said, que sera, sera. I certainly didn't think I would be packing two pairs of gloves and wind briefs for this race!

Ynot Bubba? Why not, indeed.

Break Out The Cold Weather Gear...Again
AM: 25 min :: 4M
PM: 54 min :: 9M incl 5 x 3on/2off
I was seriously debating how badly I needed to get in a faster-paced workout this afternoon. Everything feels fine, but arriving home after walking from the Light Rail in the driving wind and snow flurries left me somewhat less than eager to go run. Spring in Minnesota. I had planned to do this on the track, but reconsidered because of the conditions/wind direction and the fact that road seemed more appropriate given that will be the terrain Saturday. It worked out well. I warmed up into the wind to the Franklin Ave bridge and then (after somehow avoiding getting blown off the Franklin Bridge) got to do all five intervals with the wind down the east side of the river. Things felt good, but a little awkward as I was quite literally getting pushed down the road by the wind. It seems like cheating, but I didn't see the point of running hard into the wind at this point. I'm just trying to sharpen up.

Race Week
A day off. I thought it best to get it out of the way early in the week, lest I feel sluggish because of it. Its all part of my plan to rapidly drop volume right before the race. The weekly summary should be a hoot this time around. Miles before Saturday: about 30. Miles Saturday: 62. Its all about the race at this point.
I had a midterm in Financial Reporting tonight, so I thought I would miss the NCAA Final tonight, but I got out early and was able to jump in with five minutes left in the first half. I have to say Ohio State put up a pretty good fight for an off-shooting night. I suppose it helps when you have a 7-2 future NBA star holding down the middle. Florida was unreal. I can't remember them missing a shot the whole night. Since Kansas screwed me over, I was actually able to enjoy the game without worrying about the impact on my bracket.
Charlie Mahler from Down The Backstretch asked me a few questions about ultras and training and I answered them here.

Week of March 26 - April 1
Total Miles For Week (Year): 60 (1318)
Long Run: 9
Wow, that "long run" looks a little weak, but I suppose what good would a long run do me at this point. The hay is in the barn, as Coach Fulkrod would say. The race was little disappointing yesterday, as I was hoping to run a good, confidence building time. However, the weather took a bit of the wind out of my sails.
Right now I feel like I could run through a brick wall and just keep on going. It will be imperative that I rein in this energy, allowing it to accrue until I turn it loose little by little on race day. Easier said than done. I'm jittery already, but that could be the green tea I just drank.

No Alarm. No Problem.

Sleeping in is good. Last night Katie and I went out with a group and managed to stay awake until 12:00 a.m. Dinner at Caps (great burger) and then hopped the Light Rail downtown to Rossi's for jazz from Davina and the Vagabonds and the biggest desserts we've ever scene.
I put some new music on the Ipod and took it with me on the run. Music + rested legs = too fast. I had to really hold back, which is a good feeling going into the race.
