Ill-in

No running for me today. I woke up feeling about the same as yesterday, but it got more pronounced as the day went on. By the time I got home all I wanted to do was lie down and sleep. I could hardly eat anything, which was frustrating as I was hungrier than heck. It bummed me out to take another day off. But I am noticing some weird parallels with 2003. That year I had a really good stretch in December and January (120-150 mpw) leading up to US Cross Country Nationals the first week of Feb where I ran the 12k. The '03 Nationals were held in Houston on a muddier than muddy course. Here I am leading Wejo during the race:

Anyway, I had a pretty off day at that race and that was followed by an awful week. I ran probably three or four times, an hour at most each time. In the weeks that followed I got back into the routine, started to feel better, and rattled off 90-100 mpw for the next month leading up to the Human Race. Result: First place, 24:20 (new PR). Things started to snowball after that and I ended up setting a PR for 10k (30:40) at Get In Gear, 5k (14:36) at Brian Kraft, and 30k (1:38) at Northern Lakes. Of course the goal that year was to qualify for the Olympic Trials at Grandmas Marathon and I ended up peaking too early (probably the 30k) and tanked the last half of the race, finishing in 2:31. I then struggled for the next year finding any consistency...

But that's not the point of the story, smartypants. The point is having a bad week at this time has forced me to recover and in the end will allow me to push harder in the coming weeks. Now I just have to be more vigilant about listening to my body and avoid going too hard. Easier said than done.
