Before Dawn

In planning to run 100km in Minnesota August 2, I realized there was a good chance it was going to be hot and humid. I had, however, allowed myself to forget that fact as I trained in ideal weather for the last month. Well the heatwave is hitting Minnesota just in time and with the deadline to qualify for the 2008 US 100km team fast approaching I have no chance but to go ahead this weekend as planned. Almost.

Instead of starting at 6:00 I will be toeing the line at 5:00 a.m. with at least 3 other people crazy enough to help a guy out by running on what will probably be the hottest day of the year.

So if you were thinking of showing up to run on a whim, first of all: what were you thinking. Second, we're going at 5:00 so get to bed early. Or sleep in. I know what I would do. If you would like to be a spectator and cheer on not just me, but Mark, Keith, Paul, Sonya, and maybe Wynn, feel free to come on down.

I will draw some inspiration from Meghan who managed to accomplish the task under similar circumstances a month ago. In preparation, I have been wearing two long sleeves and a sweatshirt the past couple days while driving around with the heater on. Katie is not amused.

Good luck! This may be one of those rare occasions when trying to run a positive-split race actually makes sense.
